————————–

Man
L’Homme

In a cleft that’s christened Alt
Dans une crevasse qui est baptisée Alt
Under broken stone I halt
Sous une pierre cassée, je m’arrête
At the bottom of a pit
  Au fond d’un gouffre
That broad noon has never lit,
Que ce midi n’a jamais éclairé,
And shout a secret to the stone.
All that I have said and done,
Tout ce que j‘ai dit et fait,
Now that I am old and ill,
Maintenant que je suis vieux et malade,
Turns into a question till
Se transforme en une question jusqu’à
I lie awake night after night
rester nuit après nuit éveillé
And never get the answers right.
Et ne jamais obtenir les bonnes réponses.
Did that play of mine send out
Est-ce que ma pièce jouée envoya
Certain men the English shot?
Did words of mine put too great strain
Mes mots ont-ils eu un effet conséquent
On that woman’s reeling brain?
Sur le cerveau titubant de cette femme?
Could my spoken words have checked
Mes paroles pouvaient-elles rasséréner
That whereby a house lay wrecked?
Ce par quoi cette maison fit naufrage ?
And all seems evil until I
Et tout semble maléfique que je
Sleepless would lie down and die.
Souhaiterais me coucher et mourir.

Echo
L’Echo
Lie down and die.
Te coucher et mourir.

Man
L’Homme
That were to shirk
Ce serait se dérober
The spiritual intellect’s great work,
  Immense travail de l’intelligence spirituelle,
And shirk it in vain. There is no release
Et se dérober en vain. Il n’y a pas de libération
 In a bodkin or disease,
Dans un poignard ou une maladie,
Nor can there be work so great
As that which cleans man’s dirty slate.
While man can still his body keep
Wine or love drug him to sleep,
Waking he thanks the Lord that he
Au réveil, il remercie le Seigneur pour
Has body and its stupidity,
But body gone he sleeps no more,
And till his intellect grows sure
That all’s arranged in one clear view,
pursues the thoughts that I pursue,
Il poursuit les pensées que je poursuis,
Then stands in judgment on his soul,
And, all work done, dismisses all
Out of intellect and sight
De son esprit et de sa vue
And sinks at last into the night.
Pour disparaître dans la nuit.

Echo
L’Echo
Into the night.
Dans la nuit.

Man
L’Homme
O Rocky Voice,
O Voix du Rocher,
Shall we in that great night rejoice?
Allons-nous dans cette grande nuit nous réjouir?
What do we know but that we face
Que savons-nous, sinon que nous serons confrontés
One another in this place?
L’un et l’autre en cet endroit?
But hush, for I have lost the theme,
Its joy or night-seem but a dream;
Cette joie ou cette nuit ressemblent à un rêve;
Up there some hawk or owl has struck,
Dropping out of sky or rock,
tombant du ciel ou de la roche,
A stricken rabbit is crying out,
Un lapin frappé pousse un cri,
And its cry distracts my thought.
Et son cri distrait ma pensée.
