The Doer of Good OSCAR WILDE LE FAISEUR DE BIEN
It was night-time and He was alone.
Il faisait nuit et Il était seul.
And He saw afar-off the walls of a round city and went towards the city.
Et Il vit au loin les murailles d’une ville ronde et Il se dirigea vers la ville.

And when He came near He heard within the city the tread of the feet of joy, and the laughter of the mouth of gladness and the loud noise of many lutes.
Et quand Il s’approcha, Il entendit dans la ville des pas joyeux de pieds, le rire gai et le bruit de nombreux luths.
And He knocked at the gate and certain of the gatekeepers opened to Him.
Et Il frappa à la porte et un portier Lui ouvrit.

And He beheld a house that was of marble and had fair pillars of marble before it.
Et Il vit une maison qui était en marbre et qui avait des piliers de marbre.
The pillars were hung with garlands, and within and without there were torches of cedar.
Les piliers étaient garnis de guirlandes, et à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur se trouvaient des torches de cèdre.
And He entered the house.
Et Il entra dans la maison.

And when He had passed through the hall of chalcedony and the hall of jasper, and reached the long hall of feasting, He saw lying on a couch of sea-purple one whose hair was crowned with red roses and whose lips were red with wine.
Et quand Il eut traversé la salle la calcédoine et la salle du jaspe, Il arriva au long hall du festin et vit couché sur un canapé de pourpre marine quelqu’un dont les cheveux étaient couronnés de roses rouges et dont les lèvres étaient rouges de vin.

And He went behind him and touched him on the shoulder and said to him, `Why do you live like this?’
Et Il alla derrière lui, le toucha sur l’épaule, et lui demanda : « Pourquoi vis-tu ainsi ? »

And the young man turned round and recognised Him, and made answer and said,
Et le jeune homme se retourna, Le reconnut, et répondit :
`But I was a leper once, and you healed me. How else should I live?’
« J’ai été lépreux une fois, et tu m’as guéri. Comment pourrais-je vivre autrement ? «

And He passed out of the house and went again into the street.
Et Il sortit de la maison et retourna dans la rue.

And after a little while He saw one whose face and raiment were painted and whose feet were shod with pearls.
Et peu de temps après, Il vit une femme dont le visage était maquillé, les vêtements étaient peints et dont les pieds étaient garnis de perles.
And behind her came, slowly as a hunter, a young man who wore a cloak of two colours.
Et derrière elle, arrivait lentement, tel un chasseur, un jeune homme qui portait un manteau de deux couleurs.
Now the face of the woman was as the fair face of an idol, and the eyes of the young man were bright with lust.
Or, le visage de la femme était comme le visage d’une idole, et les yeux du jeune homme étaient brillants de luxure.

And He followed swiftly and touched the hand of the young man and said to him,
Et Il le suivit promptement, toucha la main du jeune homme, et lui dit :
`Why do you look at this woman and in such wise?’
« Pourquoi regardes-tu cette femme et de cette manière ? »

And the young man turned round and recognised Him and said,
Et le jeune homme se retourna et Le reconnut, et dit :
`But I was blind once, and you gave me sight.
« J’ai été aveugle une fois, et tu m’as donné la vue.
At what else should I look?’
Quoi d’autre devrais-je regarder ? »

And He ran forward and touched the painted raiment of the woman and said to her,
Et Il courut en avant, et toucha les vêtements peints de la femme, et lui dit :
`Is there no other way in which to walk save the way of sin?’
« N’y a-t-il d’autres moyens que de choisir le chemin du péché ? »

And the woman turned round and recognised Him, and laughed and said,
Et la femme se retourna, Le reconnut, se mit à rire et dit :
`But you forgave me my sins, and the way is a pleasant way.’
« Tu m’as pardonné mes péchés, et le chemin est agréable. »

And He passed out of the city.
Et Il sortit de la ville.

And when He had passed out of the city He saw seated by the roadside a young man who was weeping.
Et après être sorti de la ville, Il vit assis au bord de la route un jeune homme qui pleurait.

And He went towards him and touched the long locks of his hair and said to him,
Et Il s’approcha de lui, lui toucha les longues mèches de ses cheveux, et lui dit :
`Why are you weeping?’
« Pourquoi pleures-tu ? »

And the young man looked up and recognised Him and made answer,
Et le jeune homme leva les yeux, Le reconnut et répondit:
`But I was dead once and you raised me from the dead.
« Mais je suis mort une fois et tu m’as ressuscité des morts.
What else should I do but weep?’
Que puis-je faire d’autre que pleurer ? »
