THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER

A little black thing among the snow,
Une petite chose noire dans la neige,
Crying « ‘weep! ‘weep! » in notes of woe!
Pleure : «Ramoneur ! » Ramoneur! « dans des notes de malheur !
« Where are thy father and mother? Say! »–
« Où sont ton père et ta mère ? Dis ! » –
« They are both gone up to the church to pray.
« Ils sont tous les deux montés à l’église pour prier.

« Because I was happy upon the heath,
« Parce que j’étais heureux sur la lande,
  And smiled among the winter’s snow,
 Et que je souriais dans la neige de l’hiver,
 They clothed me in the clothes of death,
Ils m’ont habillé avec les vêtements de la mort,
  And taught me to sing the notes of woe.
 Et m’ont appris à chanter ces notes de malheur.

« And because I am happy and dance and sing,
« Et parce que je suis heureux et que je danse et que je chante,
 They think they have done me no injury,
Ils pensent qu’ils ne m’ont fait aucun mal,
  And are gone to praise God and his priest and king,
 Et sont allés à la louange de Dieu et de son prêtre et de son roi,
 Who make up a heaven of our misery. »
Qui constituent un ciel de notre misère « .
