Women of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
I am ashamed
J’ai honte
That being of the deathless shades I chose
Comme être immortel d’avoir choisi
A man so knotted to impurity.
Un homme débordant d’impureté

The Ghost of Cuchulain goes out
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn sort

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
 to figure of Cuchulain
à la Forme de Cûchulainn
To you that
A toi qui
have no living light, but dropped
From a last leprous crescent of the moon
D’un dernier croissant de lune lépreux,
I owe it all.
Je dois tout ça.

Figure of Cuchulain
La Forme de Cûchulainn
 Because you have failed
Parce que tu as échoué
I must forego your thanks, I that took pity
Upon your love and carried out your plan
To tangle all his life and make it nothing
That he might turn to you.
Afin qu’il se tourne vers toi.

Woman of the Sidhe:
La Femme des Sidhes
Was it from pity
Était-ce par pitié
You taught the woman to prevail against me ?

*

*

 Figure of Cuchulain
La Forme de Cûchulainn
You know my nature — by what
Tu connais ma nature – et par quel
name I am called.
Nom  je suis appelée.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Was it from pity that you hid the truth
That men are bound to women by the wrongs
They do or suffer?

Qu’ils font et qu’ils endurent ?

Figure of Cuchulain
La Forme de Cûchulainn
You know what being I am.
Tu sais ce que je suis.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
I have been mocked and disobeyed —  your power
Was more to you than my good-will, and now
I’ll have you learn what my ill-will can do:
Je vais t’apprendre ce que ma mauvaise volonté peut faire :
I lay you under bonds upon the instant
Je te lie à cet instant
To stand before our King and face the charge
  And take the punishment.
Et le poids du châtiment.

Figure of Cuchulain
La Forme de Cûchulainn
I »ll stand there first,
J’irai moi-même là-bas le premier,

And tell my story first ; and Mananan
Knows that his own harsh sea made my heart cold.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
My horse is there and shall outrun  your horse.

*

*

The Figure of Cuchulain falls back, the Woman of the Sidhe goes out. Drum taps, music resembling horse hoofs.

Eithne Inguba
Entering quickly
Entrant en se précipitant
I heard the beat of hoofs, but saw no horse ;
J’ai entendu le fracas des sabots, mais je n’ai vu aucun cheval ;
And then came other hoofs, and after that
I heard low angry cries, and thereupon
I ceased to be afraid.

J’ai cessé d’avoir peur.

Erner
Cuchulain wakes.
Cûchulainn se réveille !

The figure turns round. It once more wears the heroic mask.

Cuchulain
Eithne Inguba, take me in your arms —
Eithne Inguba, prends-moi dans tes bras –
I have been in some strange place and am afraid.

The First Musician comes to the front of the stage, the others from each side. They unfold the cloth, singing.

*

*

The Musicians
Les Musiciens

What makes her heart beat thus,
Plain to be understood?
Aussi fort pour être comprise ?
I have met in a man’s house
A statue of solitude,
Une statue de solitude,
Moving there and walking;
Se déplaçant et marchant ;
Its strange heart beating fast
Son cœur étrange battait vite
 For all our talking.
Couvrant notre conversation.
Oh, still that heart at last!
Calme ce cœur !

O bitter reward!
O amère récompense!
Of many a tragic tomb !
De tant de tombes tragiques !
And we though astonished are dumb
Et nous restons étonnés et stupides
And give but a sigh and a word,
Et ne passe qu’un soupir et un mot,
 A passing word.
Un mot fuyant.
Although the door be shut
Bien que la porte soit fermée
And all seem well enough,
Et que tout semble apaisé,

*

*

Although wide world hold not
Bien que, dans le monde entier,

A man but will give you his love
The moment he has looked at you,
Dès qu’il te voie,
He that has loved the best
Celui qui t’aimera le plus
  May turn from a statue
Peut détourner de ta statue
His too human breast.
Sa trop humaine poitrine.

O bitter reward!
O amère récompense!
Of many a tragic tomb !
De tant de tombes tragiques !
And we though astonished are dumb
Et nous restons étonnés et stupides
And give but a sigh and a word,
Et ne passe qu’un soupir et un mot,
A passing word.
Un mot fuyant.

*

*

What makes your heart so beat?
Some one should stay at her side.
Quelqu’un devrait rester à tes côtés.
When beauty is complete
Quand la beauté est accomplie
Her own thought will have died
Sa propre pensée devient morte
And danger not be diminished ;
Et le danger n’est pas écarté ;
 Dimmed at three-quarter light,
Diminuant au trois-quart de sa lumière,
 When moon’s round is finished
The stars are out of sight.
Les étoiles alors disparaissent.

O bitter reward!
O amère récompense!
Of many a tragic tomb !
De tant de tombes tragiques !
And we though astonished are dumb
Et nous restons étonnés et stupides
Or give but a sigh and a word,
Et ne passe qu’un soupir et un mot,
 A passing word.
Un mot fuyant.
Although the door be shut
Bien que la porte soit fermée
And all seem well enough,
Et que tout semble apaisé,

When the cloth is folded again the stage is bare.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
And so you think to wound her with a knife.
She has an airy body. Look and listen —
Elle a un corps éthéré. Regarde et écoute –
I have not given you eyes and ears for nothing.

The Woman of the Sidhe moves round the crouching
Ghost of Cuchulain at front of stage in a dance that grows
gradually quicker, as he slowly awakes.
At moments she
may drop her hair upon his head, but she does not kiss him.
She is accompanied by string and flute and drum.
Her mask
and clothes must suggest gold or bronze or brass or silver, so
that she seems more an idol than a human being.
This sug
gestion may be repeated in her movements.
Her hair too must keep the metallic suggestion.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
Who is it stands before me there,
Qui est là avant moi là-bas,
Shedding such light from limb and hair
As when the moon, complete at last
With every laboring crescent past,
Avec chacun de ses croissants passés,
And lonely with extreme delight,
Et seule dans un délice extrême,
Flings out upon the fifteenth night ?
Elle éclate à sa quinzième nuit ?

*

*

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sides
Because I long I am not complete.

What pulled your hands about your feet,
Pourquoi tes mains sur tes pieds,
And your head down upon your knees,
Et ta tête sur tes genoux,
And hid your face?
Et ton visage ainsi caché ?

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
Old memories :
Des vieux souvenirs :
A dying boy, with handsome face
Un garçon mourant, avec un beau visage,
Upturned upon a beaten place;
Etendu dans un lieu désert ;
A sacred yew-tree on a strand ;
Un if sacré sur la rive ;
A woman that held in steady hand
In all the happiness of her youth
Dans toute la plénitude de sa jeunesse
Before her man had broken troth,
A burning wisp to light the door ;
Une torche pour éclairer la porte ;
And many a round or crescent more ;
Et encore des lunes et encore d’autres croissants ;
Dead men and women. Memories
Des hommes et des femmes mortes. Ces souvenirs
Have pulled my head upon my knees.
Font plier ma tête sur mes genoux.

 Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Could you that have loved many a  woman
Pourrais-tu, après avoir aimé autant de femmes,
That did not reach beyond the human,
Lacking a day to be complete,
Une seule journée manquait pour être complète,
Love one that, though her heart can beat,
Lacks it but by an hour or so?

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
I know you now, for long ago
I met you on the mountain side,
Beside a well that seemed long dry,
Beside old thorns where the hawk flew.
I held out arms and hands, but you,
That now seem friendly, fled away
Qui maintenant semble amicale, tu t’es enfuie
Half woman and half bird of prey.
A moitié femme, à moitié oiseau de proie.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Hold out your arms and hands again.
Tends tes bras et tes mains à nouveau.
You were not so dumbfounded when
Tu n’étais pas aussi surpris quand
I was that bird of prey, and yet
I am all woman now.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
I am not
Je ne suis plus
The young and passionate man I was,
And though that brilliant light surpass
Et bien que cette lumière brillante dépasse
All crescent forms, my memories
Weigh down my hands, abash my eyes.

*

*

 Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Then kiss my mouth. Though memory
Alors, embrasse ma bouche. Bien que le souvenir
Be beauty’s bitterest enemy
I have no dread, for at my kiss
 Memory on the moment vanishes:
La mémoire à l’instant disparaît :
Nothing but beauty can remain.
Il ne reste plus que la beauté.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
And shall I never know again
Et je ne verrais plus jamais
Intricacies of blind remorse?
Les atrocités du remords aveugle ?

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Time shall seem to stay his course,
Le temps semblera arrêter son cours,
For when your mouth and my mouth meet
All my round shall be complete
Tout mon tour sera complet
Imagining all its circles run;
Avec tous ses croissants ;
And there shall be oblivion
Et arrivera l’oubli
Even to quench Cuchulain’s drouth,
Pour étancher la soif de Cûchulainn,
Even to still that heart.
Pour apaiser ce cœur.

*

*

 Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
Your mouth.
Tes lèvres
They are about to kiss, he turns away.
O Emer, Emer!
Ô Emer, Emer !

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
So then it is she
Alors c’est elle
Made you impure with memory.
Qui te rend impur par le souvenir.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
Still in that dream I see you stand,
A burning wisp in your right hand,
Une torche brûlante dans ta main droite,
To wait my coming to the house —
Tu m’attends à la maison –
As when our parents married us.
Comme lorsque nos parents nous marièrent.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
Being among the dead you love her,
Étant parmi les morts, tu l’aimes,
That valued every slut above her
While you still lived.
Quand tu vivais encore.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
O my lost Emer!
Ô mon Emer perdu !

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
And there is not a loose-tongued schemer

But could draw you if not dead,
Qui pouvait te faire délaisser
From her table and her bed.
Sa table et son lit.
How could you be fit to wive
Pourquoi vouloir vivre
With flesh and blood, being born to live
Where no one speaks of broken troth —
For all have washed out of their eyes
Car tous ont leurs yeux épargnés
Wind-blown dirt of their memories
Des poussières de leurs souvenirs
To improve their sight ?
Qui dégraderaient leur vision ?

*

*

Ghost of Cuchulain
Your mouth, your mouth.
Ta bouche, ta bouche !
Their lips approach but Cuchulain turns away as Emer speaks.

Emer
If he may live I am content,
S’il pouvait vivre, je serai contente,
Content that he shall turn on me —
Qu’il puisse se tourner vers moi –
If but the dead will set him free
Si les morts pouvaient me le rendre
That I may speak with him at whiles —
Eyes that the cold moon or the harsh sea
Or what I know not’s made indifferent.
Ou que sais-je, ont rendus indifférents.

Ghost of Cuchulain
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
What a wise silence has fallen in this dark !
Quel épais silence tombe dans cette obscurité !
I know you now in all your ignorance
Je sais maintenant ton ignorance
Of all whereby a lover’s quiet is rent.
What dread so great as that he should forget
The least chance sight or sound, or scratch or mark
On an old door, or frail bird heard and seen
In the incredible clear light love cast
All round about her some forlorn lost day?
That face, though fine enough, is a fool’s face
And there’s a folly in the deathless Sidhe
Beyond man’s reach.
Que ne peuvent en concevoir les hommes.

Woman of the Sidhe
La Femme des Sidhes
I told you to forget
Je t’ai dit d’oublier
After my fashion ; you would have none of it ;
A ma façon ; tu n’en as pas tenu compte ;
So now you may forget in a man’s fashion.
Alors maintenant, à la manière des hommes.
There’s an unbridled horse at the sea’s edge.
Il y a un cheval emballé au bord de la mer.
Mount — it will carry you in an eye’s wink
Monte-le,  – il te portera en un clin d’œil
To where the King of Country-Under-wave,
Old Mananan, nods above the board and moves
His chessmen in a dream. Demand your life,
Ses pions en rêve. Demande-lui ta vie,
And come again on the unbridled horse.
Et reviens sur le cheval débridé.

Ghost of Cuchulian
Le Fantôme de Cûchulainn
Forgive me those rough words.
Pardonne-moi ces durs mots.
How could you know
Comment pourrais-tu savoir
That man is held to those whom he has loved
Que l’homme tient à ceux qu’il a aimés
By pain they gave, or pain that he has given —
Intricacies of pain.
Une imbrication de peines.

THE ONLY JEALOUSY OF EMER

*

Emer
You people of the wind
Vous, peuples du vent,
Are full of lying speech and mockery.
I have not fled your face.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
You are not loved.
Il ne t’aime pas.

Emer
And therefore have no dread to meet your eyes
And to demand him of you.
Et te le demander.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
For that I have come.
You have but to pay the price and he is free.
Tu n’as qu’à payer le prix et il sera alors libre.

Emer
Do the Sidhe bargain?

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
When they set free a captive
Quand ils libèrent un captif
They take in ransom a less valued thing.
The fisher, when some knowledgeable man
Le pêcheur, quand celui-ci, par exemple,
Restores to him his wife, or son, or daughter,
Knows he must lose a boat or net, or it may be
The cow that gives his children milk ; and some
Have offered their own lives. I do not ask
Donnent jusqu’à leur propre vie. Je ne te demande ni
Your life, or any valuable thing.
Ta vie ni quelque autre chose précieuse.
You spoke but now of the mere chance that some day
Tu as parlé qu’un jour tu espérais
You’d sit together by the hearth again :
Pouvoir être réunis ensemble sous le même foyer :
Renounce that chance, that miserable hour,
Renonce à ce souhait,
  And he shall live again.
Et il revivra.

*

*

Emer
I do not question
Je ne pose pas de questions
But you have brought ill luck on all he loves ;
Mais tu as apporté de la malédiction à tout ce qu’il aime ;
And now, because I am thrown beyond your power
Unless your words are lies, you come to bargain.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
You loved your power when but newly married,
Tu aimais ton pouvoir quand tu étais jeune mariée,
And I love mine although I am old and withered.
You have but to put yourself into that power
Tu n’as qu’a t’en remettre à ce pouvoir,
And he shall live again.
Et il revivra.

Enter
No, never, never!
Non, jamais, jamais !

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
You dare not be accursed, yet he has dared.
Tu as peur d’être maudite, mais lui a osé.

Enter
I have but two joyous thoughts, two things I prize —
A hope, a memory; and now you claim that hope.
Un espoir, un souvenir ; Et maintenant, tu réclames cet espoir.

*

*

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
He’ll never sit beside you at the hearth
Or make old bones, but die of wounds and toil
On some far shore or mountain, a strange woman
Beside his mattress.
A côté de lui.

Emer
You ask for my one hope
Tu me demandes mon seul espoir
That you may bring your curse on all about him.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
You’ve watched his loves and you  have not been jealous
Knowing that he would tire, but do those tire
That love the Sidhe?
De l’amour des Sidhes ?

Emer
What dancer of the Sidhe,
Quelle danseuse des Sidhes,
What creature of the reeling moon has pursued him ?

Figure of Cuchulain
I have but to touch your eyes and give them sight;
Je n’ai qu’à toucher tes yeux et leur donner la vue ;
But stand at my left side.
Mais reste sur mon côté gauche.

He touches her eyes with his left hand, the right being
withered.

Emer
My husband there.
Mon mari là-bas !

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
But out of reach — I have dissolved the dark.
That hid him from your eyes, but not that other
That’s hidden you from his.
Qui te cache à lui.

*

*

Emer
Husband, husband!
Mon mari, mon mari !

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
Be silent, he is but a phantom now,
Silence !

And he can neither touch, nor hear, nor see.
The longing and the cries have drawn him hither.
He heard no sound, heard no articulate sound ;
Il n’entend aucun son ni parole ;
They could but banish rest, and make him dream,
And in that dream, as do all dreaming shades
Before they are accustomed to their freedom,
Gênées par leur liberté,
He has taken his familiar form, and yet
He crouches there not knowing where he is
Or at whose side he is crouched.

A Woman of the Sidhe has entered, and stands a little
inside the door

*

*

Emer
Who is this woman?
Qui est cette femme ?

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
She has hurried from the Country-Under-Wave,
And dreamed herself into that shape that he
Et s’est appropriée cette forme pour
May glitter in her basket ; for the Sidhe
Pouvoir étinceler dans son panier ; les Sidhes
Are fishers also and they fish for men
With dreams upon the hook.
Avec des rêves sur son crochet.

Emer
And so that woman
Et  cette femme donc
Has hid herself in this disguise and made
Se cache sous un déguisement
Herself into a lie.
Elle est dans le mensonge.

Figure of Cuchulain
La forme de Cûchulainn
A dream is body;
Le rêve prend vie ;
The dead move ever towards a dreamless youth
And when they dream no more return no more ;
Et quand ils ne rêvent plus, il n’y a plus de retour possible ;
And those more holy shades that never lived
But visit you in dreams.

Emer
I know her sort.
Je connais ces femmes.
They find our men asleep, weary with war,
Or weary with the chase, and kiss their lips
And drop their hair upon them. From that hour
Et déposent leurs cheveux sur eux. À partir de cette heure
Our men, who yet knew nothing of it all,
Are lonely, and when at fall of night we press
Their hearts upon our hearts their hearts are cold.

She draws a knife from her girdle.
Elle tire un couteau de sa ceinture.

 Eithne Inguba
Can you not hear my voice?
Ne peux-tu donc pas entendre sa voix ?

Emer
Bend over him.
Penche-toi sur lui.
Call out dear secrets till you have touched his heart
Rappelle-lui les secrets tendre à son cœur
If he lies there; and if he is not there
Si c’est lui qui est face à nous ; et si ce n’est pas lui
Till you have made him jealous.
Que ça le rende jaloux.

Eithne Inguba
Cuchulain, listen.
Ecoute, Cûchulainn

*

*

Emer
You speak too timidly; to be afraid
Tu parles bien trop timidement ; avoir peur

Because his wife is but three paces off,
When there is so great a need, were but to prove
Quand il faut agir, prouverait
The man that chose you made but a poor choice.
We’re but two women struggling with the sea.

Eithne lnguba
O my beloved, pardon me, that I
O mon bien-aimé, pardonne-moi,
Have been ashamed and you in so great need.
Pardonne ma honte, toi qui a tant besoin d’aide.
I have never sent a message or called out,
Scarce had a longing for your company,
Ni souhaité ta compagnie,
But you have known and come. And if indeed
Mais tu l’as su et tu es venu. Et si en effet
  You are lying there stretch out your arms and speak;
Tu te trouves là-bas, tends tes bras et parle ;
Open your mouth and speak, for to this hour
My company has made you talkative.
Ma compagnie te rendait bavard.
Why do you mope, and what has closed your ears ?
Pourquoi ce mutisme, et pourquoi es-tu sourd ?
Our passion had not chilled when we were parted
On the pale shore under the breaking dawn.
He will not hear me: or his ears are closed
Ses oreilles peut-être n’entendent pas
And no sound reaches him.
Aucun son ne pouvant l’atteindre.

Emer
Then kiss that image:
Ensuite, embrasse cette image :
The pressure of your mouth upon his mouth
May reach him where he is.

Eithne lnguba
starting back
Reculant
It is no man.
Ce n’est pas un homme !
I felt some evil thing that dried my heart
De mauvaises choses ont effrayé mon cœur
When my lips touched it.
Au contact de mes lèvres

 Emer
No, his body stirs;
Non, son corps bouge !
The pressure of your mouth has called him home;
La pression de tes lèvres l’on fait revenir ;
He has thrown the changeling out.
Il a repoussé l’imposteur !

Eithne lnguba
 going further off
Reculant encore
Look at that arm —
Regardez ce bras !
That arm is withered to the very socket.

EMER
speaking
parlant
Come hither, come sit down beside the bed
Viens ici, viens t’asseoir à côté du lit
You need not be afraid, for I myself
Tu n’as pas à avoir peur, c’est moi
Sent for you, Eithne Inguba.
Qui t’ai envoyé chercher, Eithne Inguba.

Eithne Inguba
No, Madam,
Non, Madame,
I have too deeply wronged you to sit there.

Emer
Of all the people in the world we two,
And we alone, may watch together here,
Nous deux seulement, pouvons rester ensemble ici,
Because we have loved him best.
Car nous l’avons aimé vraiment.

Eithne Inguba
And is he dead?
Est-il mort ?

Emer
Although they have dressed him out in his grave-
clothes
And stretched his limbs, Cuchulain is not dead.
The very heavens when that day’s at hand,
So that his death may not lack ceremony,
Will throw out fires, and the earth grow red with blood.
There shall not be a scullion but foreknows it
Like the world’s end.
Qu’il s’agit de la fin du monde.

Eithne Inguba
How did he come to this?
Comment en est-il arrivé là ?

ENTER Musicians, with musical instruments.
The First Musician pauses at the centre and stands with a
cloth between his hands.
The stage can be against the wall of any room.

Emer
Towards noon in the assembly of the kings
Vers midi, à l’assemblée des rois
He met with one who seemed a while most dear.
The kings stood round; some quarrel was blown up;
Les rois se tenaient debout ; Une querelle explosa ;
He drove him out and killed him on the shore
Il l’a chassé et l’a tué sur le rivage
At Baile’s tree. And he who was so killed
À l’arbre de Baile. Et celui qu’il a tué
Was his own son begot on some wild woman
When he was young, or so I have heard it said.
Quand il était jeune, ai-je entendu dire.
And thereupon, knowing what man he had killed,
 And being mad with sorrow, he ran out;
I a été foudroyé de chagrin et il s’est enfui;
And after to his middle in the foam,
With shield before him and with sword in hand,
He fought the deathless sea. The kings looked on
Il a combattu la mer à mort. Les rois l’ont regardé
And not a king dared stretch an arm, or even
Et pas un n’a bougé, ni même
Dared call his name, but all stood wondering
 In that dumb stupor like cattle in a gale;
Dans cette stupide stupeur comme du bétail dans le vent ;
Until at last, as though he had fixed his eyes
On a new enemy, he waded out
Un nouvel ennemi, il pénètre plus encore
Until the water had swept over him.
Dans les eaux qui le submergent.
But the waves washed his senseless image up
And laid it at this door.
Et le déposèrent devant cette porte.

Eithne Inguba
How pale he looks!
Comme il est pâle !

Emer
He is not dead.
Il n’est pas mort.

Eithne Inguba
You have not kissed his lips
Vous n’avez pas embrassé ses lèvres
Nor laid his head upon your breast.
Ni reposé sa tête sur votre poitrine.

Emer
It may be
Il s’agit peut-être
An image has been put into his place,
D’un masque plaqué sur sa face,
A sea-born log bewitched into his likeness,
Or some stark horseman grown too old to ride
Among the troops of Mananan, Son of the Sea,
Now that his joints are stiff.
Maintenant que ses articulations sont devenues rigides.

Eithne Inguba
Cry out his name.
Criez son nom !
All that are taken from our sight, they say,
Loiter amid the scenery of their lives
For certain hours or days ; and should he hear
He might, being angry, drive the changeling out.

Emer
It is hard to make them hear amid their darkness,
And it is long since I could call him home;
Et il y a si longtemps que je ne peux plus les appeler ;
I am but his wife, but if you cry aloud
With that sweet voice that is so dear to him
He cannot help but listen.
Il ne pourra s’empêcher d’écouter.

Eithne Inguba
He loves me best
Il m’aime plus
Being his newest love, but in the end
Will love the woman best who loved him first
And loved him through the years when love seemed lost.

Emer
I have that hope, the hope that some day and somewhere
We’ll sit together at the hearth again.

Eithne Inguba
Women like me when the violent hour is over
Are flung into some corner like old nut-shells.
Cuchulain, listen
Cûchulainn, écoute.

Emer
No, not yet — for first
Non, pas encore – d’abord

I’ll cover up his face to hide the sea;
Je couvrirai son visage pour lui cacher la mer ;
And throw new logs upon the hearth, and stir
The half burnt logs until they break in flame.
Old Mananan’s unbridled horses come
Les chevaux débridés du vieux Mananan arrivent
Out of the sea, and on their backs his horsemen ;
Sortent de la mer, et sur leur dos, ses cavaliers ;
But all the enchantments of the dreaming foam
Dread the hearth fire.
Au milieu du foyer.

[She pulls the curtains of the bed so as to hide the sick
man’s face, that the actor may change his mask unseen.
She goes to one side of platform and moves her hand as though
putting logs on a fire and stirring it into a blaze.
While she makes these movements the Musicians play, marking the movements with drum and flute perhaps.
Having finished, she stands beside the imaginary fire at a distance from Cuchulain and Eithne Inguba.]
Call on Cuchulain now.
Appelle donc Cûchulainn maintenant.

A woman’s beauty is like a white
La beauté d’une femme est comme
Frail bird, like a white sea-bird alone
At daybreak after stormy night
Between two furrows upon the ploughed land:
Entre les deux sillons d’une terre labourée :
A sudden storm and it was thrown
Between dark furrows upon the ploughed land.
Entre les sillons sombres des terres labourées.
How many centuries spent
Combien de siècles passés
The sedentary soul
L’âme sédentaire
In toils of measurement
S’acharne à mesurer
Beyond eagle or mole,
Au-delà de l’aigle ou de la taupe,
Beyond hearing or seeing,
Au-delà des sons, des visions,
Or Archimedes guess,
Ou l’adepte d’Archimède,
To raise into being
Fait ressortir
That loveliness?
Cette beauté ?

A strange unserviceable thing,
Etrange chose, inutile,
A fragile, exquisite, pale shell,
Coquille fragile, exquise et pâle,
That the vast troubled waters bring
Que les vastes eaux troublées roulent
To the loud sands before day has broken.
The storm arose and suddenly fell
Amid the dark before day had broken.
What death? what discipline?
Quelle mort ? Quelle discipline ?
What bonds no man could unbind
Quels liens aucun homme ne peut délier
Being imagined within
S’imaginant à l’intérieur
The labyrinth of the mind?
Du labyrinthe de l’esprit ?
What pursuing or fleeing?
Qu’est-ce qui poursuit, qu’est-ce qui fuit ?
What wounds, what bloody press?
Quelles plaies, quelle fièvre sanglante?
Dragged into being
Pour extraire
This loveliness.
Cette beauté.
