But only three in all God’s universe
Nur Drei jedoch in Gottes ganzem All
Have heard this word thou hast said,—Himself, beside
Entendirent ce mot que tu as dit : Lui seul , à côté
Thee speaking, and me listening! and replied
und ich, die hörte. Und in diesem Fall
Te parlant, et moi écoutant ! et a répondu
One of us . . . that was God, . . . and laid the curse
war Ers, der Antwort gab … um Ungemach
L’un de nous : c’est Dieu,. . . et ainsi jeta la malédiction

So darkly on my eyelids, as to amerce
auf meinen Augenlidern aufzuschichten
si sombre sur mes paupières, à interdire
My sight from seeing thee,—that if I had died,
so viel, daß nicht mit größeren Gewichten
Ma vue de te voir ; que si j’étais mort,
The deathweights, placed there, would have signified
Less absolute exclusion. ‘Nay’ is worse
noch einmal aufzuschlagen. Dieses hier,
l’exclusion absolue. ‘Non’ est pire

From God than from all others, O my friend!
Men could not part us with their worldly jars,
andere Nein.
Nor the seas change us, nor the tempests bend;
stehn, gegen Menschen, Meer und Sturm uns sträubend,
Ni les mers nous changer, ni les tempêtes nous plier ;

*

Our hands would touch for all the mountain-bars:
und durch Gebirg hin uns halten lernen;
Nos mains toucheraient toutes les montagnes :
And, heaven being rolled between us at the end,
We should but vow the faster for the stars.
