And the weaver said, « Speak to us of Clothes. »
Et le tisserand dit : «Parle-nous des vêtements. »

And he answered:
Et il répondit :

Your clothes conceal much of your beauty, yet they hide not the unbeautiful.
Vos vêtements cachent une grande partie de votre beauté, mais ils ne cachent pas le laid.

And though you seek in garments the freedom of privacy you may find in them a harness and a chain.
Et si vous cherchez dans les vêtements de la liberté de votre intimité, vous pouvez trouver en eux un harnais et une chaîne.

Would that you could meet the sun and the wind with more of your skin and less of your raiment,
Quel plaisir de rencontrer le soleil et le vent avec plus de votre peau et moins de votre vêtement,

For the breath of life is in the sunlight and the hand of life is in the wind.
En effet, le souffle de la vie est dans la lumière du soleil et la main de la vie est dans le vent.

Some of you say, « It is the north wind who has woven the clothes to wear. »
Certains d’entre vous disent: «C’est le vent du nord qui a filé les vêtements que nous portons. »

But shame was his loom, and the softening of the sinews was his thread.
Mais la honte était son métier à tisser, et le ramollissement du nerf son fil.

And when his work was done he laughed in the forest.
Et quand son travail a été fait, il se mit à rire dans la forêt.

Forget not that modesty is for a shield against the eye of the unclean.
N’oubliez pas que la pudeur est un bouclier contre l’œil de l’impur.

And when the unclean shall be no more, what were modesty but a fetter and a fouling of the mind?
Et quand l’impur ne sera plus, que sera la pudeur sinon une entrave et un encrassement de l’esprit ?

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.
Et n’oubliez pas que la terre se plaît à sentir vos pieds nus et les vents à jouer avec vos cheveux.

Almustafa, the chosen and the beloved, who was a dawn onto his own day, had waited twelve years in the city of Orphalese for his ship that was to return and bear him back to the isle of his birth.
