« Dans la matinée du 27, je guettai sur le tillac l’aube du jour, pour jouir de la vue de la belle île de Philæ. J’avais la plus vive curiosité de voir ses ruines ; mais quand l’aurore vint les éclairer, elles surpassèrent encore mon attente. Nous traversâmes le fleuve, et nous passâmes trois heures qui nous parurent des minutes à parcourir l’île, que je me reservais d’examiner en détail à mon retour. Je remarquai plusieurs blocs de pierres chargés d’hiéroglyphes parfaitement exécutés, qui pouvaient s’enlever, ainsi qu’un obélisque de granit d’environ vingt-deux pieds de long sur deux de large. Ce monument était également à mon avis susceptible de transport, étant d’ailleurs situé auprès de la côte. À notre retour au bateau nous mimes enfin à la voile, et dans trois heures de temps nous arrivâmes à Debod. J’avais le temple à y visiter ; mais le vent étant trop favorable pour que nous ne dussions profiter de cet avantage, je remis cette visite aussi à l’époque de notre retour. Nous nous arrêtâmes pour ce jour à la côte au-dessus de Sardib-el-Farras. »

LE DIEU AMON PAR CHAMPOLLION

« Dans le grand tableau du massif de droite, le dieu Amon-Ra, sous la forme de Phré hiéracocéphale, donne la harpé au belliqueux Rhamsès pour frapper vingt-neuf peuples du Nord ou du Midi ; dix-neuf noms de contrées ou de villes subsistent encore ; le reste a été détruit pour appuyer contre le pylône des masures modernes. Le roi des dieux adresse à Méiamoun un long discours dont voici les dix premières colonnes : « Amon-Ra a dit : Mon fils, mon germe chéri, maître du monde, soleil gardien de justice, ami d’Ammon, toute force t’appartient sur la terre entière ; les nations du Septentrion et du Midi sont abattues sous tes pieds ; je te livre les chefs des contrées méridionales ; conduis-les en captivité, et leurs enfants à leur suite ; dispose de tous les biens existant dans leur pays ; laisse respirer ceux d’entre eux qui voudront se soumettre, et punis ceux dont le coeur est contre toi. Je t’ai livré aussi le Nord….. (lacune) ; la Terre-Rouge (l’Arabie) est sous tes sandales, etc. »…
Au fond de cette première cour s’élève un second pylône, décoré de figures colossales, sculptées, comme partout ailleurs, de relief dans le creux ; celles-ci rappellent les triomphes de Rhamsès-Méiamoun dans la neuvième année de son règne. Le roi, la tête surmonte des insignes du fils aîné d’Ammon, entre dans le temple d’Amon-Ra et de la déesse Mouth, conduisant trois colonnes de prisonniers de guerre, imberbes, et enchaînés dans diverses positions ; ces nations, appartenant à une même race, sont nommées Schakalascha, Taônaou et Pourosato.  »
