To the Muses

Aux Muses

Traduction Jacky Lavauzelle

Whether on Ida’s shady brow,
         Or in the chambers of the East,
         Ou dans les chambres de l’Est,
The chambers of the sun, that now
Les chambres du soleil, que maintenant
From ancient melody have ceas’d;
       La mélodie ancienne a déserté ;

**

Whether in Heav’n ye wander fair,
Or the green corners of the earth,
 Or the blue regions of the air,
      Where the melodious winds have birth;
        Où les vents mélodieux prennent naissance ;

**

Whether on crystal rocks ye rove,
      Beneath the bosom of the sea
         Au sein de la mer
Wand’ring in many a coral grove,
Errant dans les si nombreux coraux,
Fair Nine, forsaking Poetry!
         Jolie Neuvaine, abandonnant la Poésie!

**

How have you left the ancient love
Comment avez-vous quitté l’ancien amour
That bards of old enjoy’d in you!
         De concert avec les bardes d’autrefois !
The languid strings do scarcely move!
Les cordes langoureuses ne bougent plus guère!
The sound is forc’d, the notes are few!

NURSE’S SONG

Chanson de Nourrice

Traduction Jacky Lavauzelle

When the voices of children are heard on the green,
And whisperings are in the dale,
Et des chuchotements dans la vallée,
  The days of my youth rise fresh in my mind,
 My face turns green and pale.
Mon visage devient vert et pâle.

**

Then come home, my children, the sun is gone down,
And the dews of night arise;
Et la rosée de la nuit se pose ;
Your spring and your day are wasted in play,
And your winter and night in disguise.

INTRODUCTION

Poème – Poem

Traduction Jacky Lavauzelle

Piping down the valleys wild,
Pipant au fond des vallées sauvages
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
Pipant des chansons agréables de joie
On a cloud I saw a child,
Sur un nuage, je vis un enfant.
And he laughing said to me :
Et il me dit en riant :

**

« Pipe a song about a Lamb ! »
« Pipe une chanson sur un Agneau ! »
So I piped with merry chear,
Donc, je pipais avec un entrain joyeux,
 « Piper, pipe that song again ; »
« Pipeur, pipe cette chanson à nouveau ; »
So I piped : he wept to hear.
Ainsi pipai-je : il pleura à l’entendre.

**

« Drop thy pipe thy happy pipe,
 » Pose ton pipeau, ton si joyeux pipeau,
Sing thy songs of happy chear,
Chante tes chansons de joyeuse manière,
So I sung the same again,
Ainsi chantai-je le même refrain à nouveau,
While he wept with joy to hear.

**

« Piper, sit thee down and write
« Pipeur, assistoi  et écris
In a book that all may read. »
Dans un livre que tous puissent lire. »
 So he vanish’d from my sight,
Alors, il disparu de ma vue.
And I pluck’d a hollow reed,
Et je pris un roseau creux,

**

And I made a rural pen,
Et j’en fis un stylo grossier,
And I stain’d the water clear,
Et j’en teignis l’eau claire,
 And I wrote my happy songs
Et mes chansons joyeuses j’écrivis
Every child may joy to hear.

THE GARDEN OF LOVE
—–
Le Jardin d’Amour

I went to the Garden of Love,
Je suis allé au Jardin d’Amour,
And saw what I never had seen:
Et vu ce que je ne l’avais jamais vue :
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Une chapelle était construite en plein milieu,
Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
And ‘Thou shalt not’  writ over the door;
Et « Tu ne feras pas« , était écrit sur cette porte ;
So I turn’d to the Garden of Love,
Je me suis tourné alors vers le Jardin d’Amour,
That so many sweet flowers bore.
Que tant de fleurs douces décoraient.

And I saw it was filled with graves,
Et je l’ai vu rempli de tombes,
And tomb-stones where flowers should be:
Et de pierres tombales où les fleurs devaient être:
And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

THE ECCHOING GREEN
La Prairie des Echos

The sun does arise,
Le soleil apparaît,
And make happy the skies.
Et rend heureux les cieux.
The merry bells ring
Les cloches sonnent joyeuses
To welcome the Spring
Pour accueillir le printemps
The sky-lark and thrush,
L’alouette et la grive,
The birds of the bush,
Les oiseaux des broussailles,
Sing louder around,
Chantent plus fort encore,
 To the bells’ cheerful sound.
Avec  les cloches enjouées.
While our sports shall be seen
Quant à nos jeux vous les verrez
On the Ecchoing Green.
Sur la Prairie des Echos

*

Old John, with white hair
Le vieux John, avec ses cheveux blancs
Does laugh away care,
Rejette les soucis en riant,
Sitting under the oak,
Assis sous le chêne,
Among the old folk,
Parmi les vieux,
They laugh at our play,
Ils rient de notre jeu,
And soon they all say.
Et bientôt, ils disent tous.
  ‘Such, such were the joys.
« Ainsi étaient nos agréments
When we all girls & boys,
Lorsque nous tous, filles et garçons,
 In our youth-time were seen,
Dans notre jeunesse nous étions,
On the Ecchoing Green.’
Sur la Prairie des Echos. »

*

Till the little ones weary
Enfin les plus petits, fatigués
No more can be merry
Ne peuvent plus être joyeux
The sun does descend,
Le soleil descend,
And our sports have an end:
Et nos jeux prennent fin :
Round the laps of their mothers,
Ils s’arrondissent auprès de leurs mères,
Many sisters and brothers,
Parmi les frères et les sœurs,
Like birds in their nest,
Comme les oiseaux dans leur nid,
Are ready for rest;
Ils sont prêts pour le repos;
And sport no more seen,
Et le jeu ne se voit plus
On the darkening Green.
Sur la Prairie qui s’assombrit.

The Clod and The Pebble La motte et le caillou William Blake par Thomas Phillips Traduction Artgitato française

THE CLOD and THE PEBBLE
La Motte et le Caillou

« Love seeketh not itself to please,
«L’amour ne cherche pas à se plaire à lui-même ,
Nor for itself hath any care,
But for another gives its ease,
And builds a Heaven in Hell’s despair. »

*

So sung a little Clod of Clay
Ainsi chantait une petite Motte de Terre
Trodden with the cattle’s feet,
Foulée par les sabots du troupeau,
But a Pebble of the brook
Mais un Caillou du ruisseau
Warbled out these metres meet:
Gazouillait ces vers à son encontre :

*

« Love seeketh only self to please,
«L’amour ne cherche qu’à se plaire à lui-même,
To bind another to its delight,
Joys in another’s loss of ease,
And builds a Hell in Heaven’s despite. »

THE LILY
Le Lys

The modest Rose puts forth a thorn,
The humble sheep a threat’ning horn:
L’humble mouton menace de sa corne :
While the Lily white shall in Love delight,
Nor a thorn nor a threat stain her beauty bright.

THE ANGEL
L’Ange

 I dreamt a dream! What can it mean?
Je rêvais un rêve ! Qu’est-ce que cela signifie ?
And that I was a maiden Queen
Et que j’étais une jeune Reine
   Guarded by an Angel mild:
Gardée par un Ange clément :
Witless woe was ne’er beguil’d!
Malheur stupide ne fut jamais séduit !

And I wept both night and day,
Et je pleurais nuit et jour,
And he wiped my tears away;
Et il a essuyé mes larmes ;
   And I wept both day and night,
Et je pleurais jour et nuit,
 And hid from him my heart’s delight.

So he took his wings, and fled;
Alors il  ouvrit ses ailes, et fuit ;
 Then the morn blushed rosy red.
Puis le matin rougit de rose rougeur.
 I dried my tears, and armed my fears
With ten-thousand shields and spears.
Avec dixmille boucliers et lances.

Soon my Angel came again;
Bientôt mon Ange fut de retour ;
 I was armed, he came in vain;
J’étais armé, il vint en vain;
 For the time of youth was fled,
le temps de la jeunesse avait disparu,
And grey hairs were on my head.
Et les cheveux gris recouvraient  ma tête.

THE SHEPHERD
Le Berger

How sweet is the shepherd’s sweet lot!
From the morn to the evening he strays;
Du matin au soir, il vagabonde ;
He shall follow his sheep all the day,
And his tongue shall be filled with praise.

For he hears the lambs’ innocent call,
And he hears the ewes’ tender reply;
Et il entend la réponse des brebis;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their shepherd is nigh.

Holy Thursday William Blake Saint Jeudi Traduction Artgitato française

WILLIAM BLAKE
1757-1827

HOLY THURSDAY

 Saint Jeudi

‘Twas on a Holy Thursday, their innocent faces clean,
The children walking two & two in red & blue & green,
Grey-headed beadles walk’d before with wands as white as snow,
Till into the high dome of Paul’s they like Thames’ waters flow.

**

O what a multitude they seem’d these flowers of London town !
Seated in companies they sit with radiance all their own.
The hum of multitudes was there, but multitudes of lambs,
Thousands of little boys & girls raising their innocent hands.

Now like a mighty wind they raise to heaven the voice of song,
Or like harmonious thunderings the seats of Heaven among.
Beneath them sit the aged men wise guardians of the poor ;
Sous eux, s’asseyaient les hommes âgés, sages gardiens des pauvres ;
Then cherish pity, lest you drive an angel from your door.
