How can my muse want subject to invent

La Dixième Muse

1598

**

*

How can my muse want subject to invent,
Comment ma Muse pourrait-elle manquer d’invention,
While thou dost breathe, that pour’st into my verse
Car tant que tu respires, tu inondes mon verset
Thine own sweet argument, too excellent
De ton propre argument aimable, toi, trop sublime
For every vulgar paper to rehearse?
Pour être couchée sur un vulgaire papier ?

*

*

O! give thy self the thanks, if aught in me
O  ! loue-toi, si en moi
 Worthy perusal stand against thy sight ;
Tu trouves lecture à tes yeux ;
For who’s so dumb that cannot write to thee,
When thou thy self dost give invention light?
Quand tu donnes la lumière à l’imagination elle-même ?

*

*

Be thou the tenth Muse, ten times more in worth
Than those old nine which rhymers invocate;
Que les neuf autres que les versificateurs invoquent ;
And he that calls on thee, let him bring forth

*

Eternal numbers to outlive long date.
If my slight muse do please these curious days,
The pain be mine, but thine shall be the praise.
