Piping down the valleys wild,
Pipant au fond des vallées sauvages
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
Pipant des chansons agréables de joie
On a cloud I saw a child,
Sur un nuage, je vis un enfant.
And he laughing said to me :
Et il me dit en riant :

« Pipe a song about a Lamb ! »
« Pipe une chanson sur un Agneau ! »
So I piped with merry chear,
Donc, je pipais avec un entrain joyeux,
 « Piper, pipe that song again ; »
« Pipeur, pipe cette chanson à nouveau ; »
So I piped : he wept to hear.
Ainsi pipai-je : il pleura à l’entendre.

« Drop thy pipe thy happy pipe,
 » Pose ton pipeau, ton si joyeux pipeau,
Sing thy songs of happy chear,
Chante tes chansons de joyeuse manière,
So I sung the same again,
Ainsi chantai-je le même refrain à nouveau,
While he wept with joy to hear.
Pendant qu’il pleurait si joyeux de l’entendre.

« Piper, sit thee down and write
« Pipeur, assis–toi  et écris
In a book that all may read. »
Dans un livre que tous puissent lire. »
 So he vanish’d from my sight,
Alors, il disparu de ma vue.
And I pluck’d a hollow reed,
Et je pris un roseau creux,

And I made a rural pen,
Et j’en fis un stylo grossier,
And I stain’d the water clear,
Et j’en teignis l’eau claire,
 And I wrote my happy songs
Et mes chansons joyeuses j’écrivis
Every child may joy to hear.
Que chaque enfant ait la joie d’entendre.
